Three Perfect Days Kauai

November 04, 2019

Calder’s main goal on our Hawaiian vacation is to eat as much shave ice as possible, so as soon as we get back on land, we head over to The Fresh Shave, a mini trailer in nearby Kalaheo with offerings named for mustache styles; I get the Fu Man Chu (strawberry, banana, cream) while Calder gets The Whiskers (lime and mint), and Chris opts for The Handle Bar (pineapple and coconut).

October 15, 2019

The Fresh Shave, a handcrafted shaved ice concept at Fourth and Roosevelt streets, hosted its grand opening on October 4, and the reception from the area has so far been anything but icy. "First Friday felt like a giant Hawaiian bear hug," says general manager Donald Provencio.

For snacks and shopping, visit Warehouse 3540—a community marketplace with artist studios, artisanal coffee and food trucks. If you can’t decide, we recommend hitting up The Fresh Shave first. The little food truck serves shaved iced with local organic ingredients and handmade syrups. What's this item about? What makes it interesting? The Fresh Shave Opens In Waimea

May 05, 2019

The Fresh Shave, a handcrafted shave ice company based out of a vintage camper trailer on the South Shore of Kauai, announced the grand opening of their second location on island.

October 14, 2017

A kind of bliss had washed over me. As I drove down to Warehouse 3540 to pick up lunch at Roots in Culture and some amazing artisanal shave ice at The Fresh Shave, I thought this through a little more and it dawned on me that I’ve felt similarly in other atmospheres. There was my recent trip to Champagne, France, where I felt at peace looking out at the leafy vineyards.

The Fresh Shave specializes in shave ice using organic ingredients and local farm fresh produce.  They make their shave ice by hand and use syrups that are homemade.  The menu is especially cute as each shave ice flavor is named after a popular mustache style and every straw is decorated with a fun mustache sticker.

The food trucks in Kapaa, in Kauai’s east, are known for their fresh fish tacos and Hawaiian fare, but if you find yourself near Lawai in the south of the island, pull off Koloa Road and grab a shave ice from The Fresh Shave truck. Kauai’s signature dessert is revamped with organic ingredients and locally grown fruit, rather than corn syrup and artificial flavouring.

August 15, 2017

The Fresh Shave is parked in front of Warehouse 3540, once a heap of corrugated metal and decaying wood that vaguely resembled a building, and now an airy, industrial-chic hub for boutiques and galleries. My Instagram senses, already tingling, hit overdrive at the sight of The Fresh Shave, another all-natural shave-ice spot with a shiny, vintage trailer rounded like a giant Twinkie (a 1961 Aristocrat Lil Loafer, for the enthusiasts who want to know).

Are you even in Hawaii if you’re not eating shave ice? (Answer: No, you are not.) With the Islands’ warm weather, there’s rarely an hour when a shave ice cone, cup or bowl isn’t appropriate. Though they're everywhere here and may appear a dime-a-dozen, remember that not all are hand-packed equal.

June 15, 2017

At a parking lot on Kaua‘i’s south side, a 1960s Lil’ Loafer polished-chrome trailer churns out shave ice with rivulets of cream running over a cascade of fresh strawberry puree, capped with bananas. Shave ice—ice shaved finer than snow from a single block, then rounded and soaked in syrup—isn’t new. But shops around the state are taking novel approaches to this classic Hawai‘i treat.

Shave ice on the islands is getting a gourmet spin. Find organic ingredients, unique twists and more at The Fresh Shave, where Priscilla and Daniel Soulé serve a version with no corn syrup or artificial colors. They even shave the ice using a manual Japanese ice carver. “We wanted a handcrafted product, from start to finish; it’s more of an art,” says Priscilla. The Fresh Shave’s menu highlights locally grown fruit, such as apple bananas from the Soulés’ own yard.

Long Beach residents’ latest brag offers beer from Smog City Brewing Co., Neapolitan pizza from Desano Pizza Bakery, Ramen from Tajima Ramen, mustache-themed shaved ice from The Fresh Shave...

March 06, 2017

If you've never experienced the glory of shave ice, you're in for a serious treat. Shave ice is a Hawaii dessert consisting of shaved ice that's been covered in syrup and toppings. Don't confuse it with a snow cone, which is made with crushed ice, and whatever you do: Don't call it shaved ice. It's shave ice. Got it? Good. Because there's nothing like grabbing a bowlful after the beach.

A shave ice truck that uses top-quality ingredients—think flakes of coconut, chunks of fresh fruit, and chia seeds—that also serves up its cups with playful mustache straws. With a sweet location about 10 miles west of the airport, the whole enterprise makes for the perfect first stop for just-arriving visitors.

February 02, 2017

Mayor Robert Garcia and Cohn toasted with pint glasses of beer at the official opening ceremony, surrounded by a robust crowd of media, city officials, community members and their families.  “These business owners are taking a chance on this project because they believe in it,” said Garcia. “We thank you for investing in Long Beach[...] We’re so proud of this corner, we’re so proud that this place not just speaks to great business, but speaks to our city. Containers, the port, trade. It’s a special moment.”

It’s impossible to visit Hawaii without treating yourself to at least one shave ice. It would be like trying to say no to a lobster roll when in Maine. Unassuming stands and shacks dot the shores and can be found in nearly every small town along the way. And it’s only a matter of time before someone walks by with a towering, rainbow-hued work of edible art to make you crave the icy dessert even more. FYI: Hawaiians call it “shave ice,” not “shaved ice.”

September 22, 2016

Since the company’s inception in 2014, The Fresh Shave has been focused on offering desserts with
no artificial preservatives, additives or colors. “We’re excited to share our organic, handcrafted shave ice with Southern California,”...

First of all, it’s Shave ice, not shaved ice, gotta make sure you’re using the proper lingo! Secondly, this place rocks. I loved it’s modern and fun branding and the flavors are delicious. We went to The Fresh Shave a few times during our trip, my favorite was The Professor, but The Chevron is their most popular. Each shave ice is named after a mustache; it’s pretty fun. And don’t forget to ask about the secret menu while you’re there!

This year has seen the opening of a variety of new, fun eateries along Kauai’s southern shore, from Roy Yamaguchi’s newest hot spot to a seasonal, organic shave ice stand with a mustache theme (yes, really). Here’s the scoop on three new places to try:

If you want a good shave ice, hit up The Fresh Shave mobile. It is fresh, it is tasty. And it is super cute too. My favorite was the Whiskers. It was a lime and mint syrup and yummy! But their daily special was pretty great too. Honestly, you probably can’t go wrong with an order from here.

The Fresh Shave, was our favorite shave ice on the island. They explore unique flavor combinations such as cold brew shave ice, watermelon cucumber and basil combos, and coconut and lime. And they make all their syrups fresh in small batches and do not use high fructose corn syrup.

Oahu might have paved the way for the explosive popularity of local style shave ice, but Kauai has quickly taken over as the king of the fresh fruit shave ice movement. The Fresh Shave, owned by Daniel & Priscilla Soule chooses to use all-natural, local, and organic produce in their shave ice.
